Officially the State University of New York at Buffalo, the University at Buffalo is a public research university regarded as the largest public university in the state of New York. Classified as among universities with a very high level of research activity (R1), the university has the largest research funding in the SUNY system. Founded by then United States President Millard Fillmore, the University of Buffalo—UB or SUNY Buffalo to some—also has the largest endowment in the territory, enabling it to offer bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and professional degrees by the hundreds.
The quality of its education is reflected by a good number of exemplary alumni who have earned Nobel and Pulitzer prizes, become billionaires, and attained other notable distinctions. It is a distinguished member of the Association of American Universities, a reflection of its vast contributions to extensive and fruitful research.
As one of the university centers of State University of New York, the University of Buffalo operates thirteen schools and colleges. Among these are the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, School of Architecture and Planning, School of Law, College of Arts and Sciences, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, School of Dental Medicine, the Graduate School of Education, and the Roswell Park Graduate School that it runs in partnership with the Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
Of these, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is distinguished as the only academic institution in the state of New York to offer an Aerospace Engineering degree. The College of Arts and Sciences, meanwhile, is the university's largest, offering a comprehensive list of programs that include those in the arts and sciences.
The university is home to the Center of Excellence in Materials Informatics and Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences, two of the eleven New York Centers of Excellence. These centers play a key role in the university's objective to imbue pure academic research activities with economic initiatives for the advancement of the community. The university sustains these multidisciplinary research facilities, numbering 160 in all and continuously expanding, with approximately $400 million funding, which is among the highest in the country and the world. Its commitment to more current global needs is reflected in the establishment of three new Communities of Excellence, namely the Genome, the Environment, and the Microbiome; Global Health Equity; and the Sustainable Manufacturing and Advanced Robotic Technologies.
In terms of information and inquiry resources, the University of Buffalo maintains nine libraries to serve its academic citizens. The libraries possess around 4 million print materials, all of which are supplemented by modern digital resources in the form of multiple databases, multimedia, and journals. The university is noted for its unique collection of James Joyce artifacts and manuscripts, the single largest collection anywhere.
