Facts About University of Macedonia

The University of Macedonia is a public higher education institution located in the city of Thessaloniki, Macedonia, Greece. It is the second university established in the city of Thessaloniki and it specializes in Social and Economic Sciences. Founded in 1948, it is the youngest institution of higher learning in the Macedonia region.

The university traces its origins back to 1930 when the Evening Business School was founded by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Thessaloniki. 18 years later, the school was transformed into the Graduate School of Industrial Studies of Thessaloniki — the earliest known form of the University of Macedonia. The university, however, began its academic operations in A.Y. 1957-1958 and has been functional for more than six decades now.

The University of Macedonia operations are managed on a single campus located on Egnatia Street in Thessaloniki. The campus has teaching and seminar rooms, administration offices, a library, amphitheaters, a restaurant gymnasium, a basketball court, and a bookstore. It is also home to the university’s four schools: Business Administration; Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts; Economic and Regional Studies; and Information Sciences.

The schools are further divided into eight departments: Business Administration; Accounting and Finance; Balkan, Slavic, and Oriental Studies; Economics; Applied Informatics; Music, Science, and Art; Educational and Social Policy; and International and European Studies. The departments make it easy for the University of Macedonia to offer bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in various fields of study.

Being a medium-sized institution, the university is home to over 12,900 undergraduate and more than 3,000 postgraduate and Ph.D. students. In addition, it has employees more than 190 research and teaching staff, and 72 special teaching staff/lab staff/special technical lab staff. The institution has a large network of alumni living in different countries in the world. One of its notable alumni is Anna Korakaki, the 2016 Olympics Gold medalist in the 25m pistol.

The University of Macedonia has a research institute created to support research activities in the institution. The institute is mandated to promote and develop research programs regarding social and economic developments and structures. In addition, the institution has established partnerships with other universities and research centers to accelerate the creation of solutions that solve the needs of society. Beyond research, the institution has created multiple initiatives and events to foster the cultural affairs of Thessaloniki.

The university has two departmental libraries: one in Naousa under the department of Technology Management, and the other in Edessa under the department of Marketing and Operations Management.
