The University of New Mexico (UNM) is a public coeducational university located in the state’s largest city, Albuquerque. As New Mexico’s flagship university, it offers a wide variety of certificate and degree programs. These include over 90 bachelor’s, 70 master’s, and 30 doctoral programs. The courses are offered through the university’s 12 schools and colleges of arts and sciences, architecture and planning, education, engineering, fine arts, law, management, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and public administration. To date, it is the only university in the state that has schools that focus on the fields of architecture, law, and medicine.
Founded on February 28, 1889, the University of New Mexico is the product of House Bill No. 186 passed by the Legislative Assembly of the Territory of New Mexico. The bill stipulated that the university must be located near or inside the town of Albuquerque, within two miles north of the railroad avenue. It was also meant to be the state university once New Mexico becomes a state.
The University of New Mexico is an institution serving the Hispanic community, making it the only one of its kind in the United States. As such, the institution is known for its diversity, with its great mix of cultural backgrounds. The university’s School of Medicine, School of Law, the Anderson School of Management, and School of Engineering have been named by the Hispanic Business Magazine as among the leading schools in the U.S. Moreover, UNM is also considered a Carnegie Research University for its very high research activity.
Aside from its academic and research reputation, UNM also takes pride in its outstanding faculty, which include a Nobel Laureate, MacArthur Fellows, and members of national academies. The UNM faculty members have already published numerous professional journals on various platforms, including Scientific American and the New England Journal of Medicine and Nature. UNM professors have also been quoted multiple times in prestigious publications, such as US News, Newsweek, Business Week, and People Magazine, among others. Many UNM educators have also been invited on TV shows, including Good Morning America and Today Show to share their points of view on topics related to their academic expertise.
Currently, the UNM occupies 800 acres of land in the midst of the Sandia Mountains and the Rio Grande river. It is home to libraries, performance studios, museums, and art galleries that all add to the university’s pride. Most of the buildings inside the campus reflect Hispanic-influenced architecture.
