Special Issue Call for Papers:

The life cycle of eukaryotes involves an alternation of haploid and diploid stages. In multicellular eukaryotes discoveries of activation waves, mitotic waves, imaginal disc furrows, calcium waves and differentiation waves suggest that more is going on than differential gene expression as an organism starts from the one-cell zygote through cell division, embryogenesis and maturity. While the bottom up approach of molecular developmental biology has yielded a richness of biochemical mechanisms, it has not shown how these are organized in space and time. Research on these various waves, which may share underlying common mechanisms, points a way to bridging the gap between the molecular level and the whole organism.

The fundamental act in the fertilization process of all animal species involves the interaction of the spermatozoon with the egg cortex, resulting in various waves that propagate along the cortex. Depending on the species, the activated spermatozoon has the ability to fertilize the oocytes before, during, or after the meiotic maturation process, indicating that the fertilizable conditions are correlated with the structural organization of the egg cortex at the time of fertilization, and to the changes at the egg surface following monospermic egg activation. Upon insemination the fertilized zygote undergoes cleavage by the process of cell division to develop into an adult organism, which are initially organized as cleavage waves that traverse the embryo. Differentiation waves may be responsible for determining the fate of each cell.

New research or reviews on any of the aspects of waves in development are welcome.

Authors interested in participating in this special issue are requested to provide a tentative title and authorship to the guest editors before September 30, 2020. Manuscripts will be peer-reviewed following standard BioSystems journal procedures.
