Aim and Scope:
With the latest advances of AI technology, images, audio, videos, and textual information can easily be transformed or synthesized in real-time. In many domains, the “synthetic media” are difficult to distinguish from real by the human eye and ear. The online generation and dissemination of the synthetic media through the Internet media such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and TikTok, can easily produce “fake news” with fast spread. Therefore, the potential impact of the synthetic media on the Internet has garnered immense public attention, major concerns are rising from media and security organizations as well as from governments. In recent years, more attention has been paid on automatic generation and detection of synthetic media in academic papers. However, the social impact of synthetic media diffused on the web has not been sufficiently examined. Most of the initial work concerns the ability of humans to detect them. It is time to understand any possible effects that synthetic media might have on people, societies, and how psychological and social media theories apply to this new technology.
The aim of this multi-disciplinary special issue is to bring together researchers from web science, multimedia, computer vision, deep learning, social network analysis, social computing, and other scientific disciplines (e.g. psychology, sociology, and ethics). This special issue seeks high-quality and original contributions that advance the concepts, methods, perspectives and theories of synthetic media as well as address the social impact, user attitudes, psychological behaviors about synthetic media.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Detection and interventions of synthetic media on the Internet
- Different sources, domains, and purposes of synthetic media
- New theories and techniques around synthetic media
- Impacts of synthetic media on users, groups, and societies
- Network analysis and diffusion of synthetic media
- Usefulness and trust analysis of social media tools Large-scale multimedia forensic analysis
- Interpretable multimedia forensics and deep learning
- Detection and analysis of disinformation, hoaxes and fake news
- Contribution of online communities in the incubation, spread, and/or detection of synthetic media
- National, cultural, and institutional differences in the nature and dynamics of synthetic media
- Crowdsourcing innovations to counter synthetic media on the Internet
- Applications of synthetic media detection methods to real-world problems
