Information for the Special Issue

Special Issue Call for Papers:

The world of children’s toys has continued to evolve with advances in embedded electronics, digital capabilities, and wireless connectivity. Smart toys, and robots represent an increasingly vibrant range of play objects that combine different capabilities such as networking, processing and intelligent reasoning. These interactive objects posit a growing and promising form of technology capable of sensing and processing data in real-time during CCI.

Special Issue Description

The world of children’s toys has continued to evolve with advances in embedded electronics, digital capabilities, and wireless connectivity. Smart toys, and robots represent an increasingly vibrant range of play objects that combine different capabilities such as networking, processing and intelligent reasoning. These interactive objects posit a growing and promising form of technology capable of sensing and processing data in real-time during CCI.

The increasing uses of those interactive objects in CCI and the rise of data-driven methods and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques reinforce intelligent features and adaptivity, but also brings with it many important privacy issues and concerns. This special issue aims at digging into the research challenges concerned with interaction design of smart toys, tangibles, robots and other smart things for children, with a special emphasis on interactive intelligent features and their design and effects on interactions.

We welcome and encourage researchers in this cross-disciplinary field to submit original research articles reporting experiments, case studies, reviews, as well as theoretical work investigating the role of smart objects for children. In particular, review contributions are welcome on (but not limited to) the following topics:

  • Smart Toys, Robots and design of interactive intelligent features
  • Children Interaction with Smart Devices
  • AI-powered devices and data-driven interactions
  • User expectations of smart technologies
  • Creative Technologies and Innovative Interactive Content for smart and intelligent devices
  • Design of activities with smart play
  • Meaningful play and learning experiences
  • Design methods and methodologies
  • Privacy issues and concerns
  • Costs, benefits and consequences of intelligent features and devices such as sustainability
  • Future trends and directions in th field

Timeline

  • Deadline for abstract submissions (optional but recommended): 10 October 2020
  • Deadline for manuscript submissions: (30 October ~1Nov) 2020
  • Feedback Reviews: 31 March 2021
  • Paper Resubmission: 30 April 2021
  • Publication date: 1 June 2021

Submission Instructions

The submission system will be open around one week before the first paper comes in. When submitting your manuscript please select the article type “VSI: Smart Tech for Children”. Please submit your manuscript before the submission deadline.

All submissions deemed suitable to be sent for peer review will be reviewed by at least two independent reviewers. Once your manuscript is accepted, it will go into production, and will be simultaneously published in the current regular issue and pulled into the online Special Issue. Articles from this Special Issue will appear in different regular issues of the journal, though they will be clearly marked and branded as Special Issue articles.
