Manufacturing landscape is changing rapidly, with several innovations in manufacturing systems ranging from 3D printing to collaborative robots. The new era will be marked by extremely agile manufacturing industries that utilizes the benefits of digital and smart technologies to deliver products in a hypercompetitive world. The concept of adopting smart manufacturing systems can be felt as complicated. However, recent technological developments and trends have made the industries to move towards a more adaptive, flexible, and responsive manufacturing system. The increased uncertainty and unpredictability combined with the competition in the market are relatively new pressures that industries need to tackle effectively. Over the last few months, manufacturing industries are experiencing an accelerated disruption and uncertainty in the market marked by trade wars, ongoing COVID-19 pandemic etc. This forces the industries either to shift their gears or thrown into deep uncertain future. Companies like Ford and General Electric have changed their production systems within a very short period of time to produce ventilators. It is very critical for any industry to acknowledge the uncertainties as positive influences rather than being affected significantly.
Smart manufacturing technologies provides opportunity for industries to be predictive, proactive, agile, and lean. To increase the automation and achieve higher efficiency, industries will increasingly utilize IoT, 3D-printing, robotics, cloud computing and AI. With highly adaptable robotic systems, the range of tasks that can be automated will be increased and also help in speeding up the production. The data obtained from such systems will provide increasing transparency and also visual representations of the processes which helps the industry to be responsive. This will help in real-time decision making, predictive automation (maintenance), and produce to order.
Scope of the Special Issue
The purpose of this Special Issue (SI) of the Robotics and Computer-Integrated Manufacturing is to provide a forum for publishing original and high-quality research articles on the recent developments for smart and responsive manufacturing systems focusing on how the industries mitigate the uncertainties in the market. The aim is to report the state-of-the-art on relevant research topics and highlight the barriers, challenges and opportunities in this area. This will help to advance related research, industrial applications and implementation. The scope of this SI covers all the topics on smart and responsive manufacturing, including, but are not limited to:
