Special Issue Call for Papers:

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically disrupted the healthcare, social and economic systems of most of the countries, bringing out new impelling needs for technical solutions. Robots and autonomous systems can play a crucial role in tackling the challenges in the areas of clinical care, logistics, reconnaissance, continuity of work, and maintenance of socioeconomic functions. Besides the management of the immediate response to infectious diseases, research and development of advanced technologies, e.g., robot technology, Internet of Things (IoT), Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), may also have an impact to combat disease and manage public health. Many systems with various technological readiness levels, from well-established commercial products to preliminary research prototypes, have already come to the aid of people dealing with a wide variety of tasks at different sites (e.g., hospital, factory). Systems that are deployed or being developed in a clear partnership with end-users are of interest to the present special issue. For deployed technologies, contributions should emphasize descriptive use cases, where robotic and autonomous systems from academia, industry, or practitioners have been tested in operation. Reports of developed robotic systems instead should include the engineering analysis on how they have been conceived and designed for the solution of the targeted need. Submitted manuscripts with high-quality content would also be eligible for support with grammatical revision and editing as free service offered by Elsevier.

Topics of Interest include but are not limited to:

  • disease prevention, e.g., disinfection and contact tracking
  • infection detection in the general population, e.g., drones identifying possible infected citizens
  • infection testing, e.g., bio-sample collection and its disposal
  • clinical and non-hospital care, including telehealth and telemedicine
  • fabrication, use, and disposal of Personal Protective Equipment
  • maintenance of social functions, e.g., education and entertainment
  • continuity of work and economic services, e.g., telecommuting, e-commerce, goods delivery
  • factory reconfiguration and repurposing
  • supply chain and laboratory automation
  • design and production/prototyping of useful devices
  • robots for telesurgery and telerehabilitation
  • socially assistive robots
  • descriptive use case and engineering analysis of robotic systems from companies or end-users
  • review and survey of robotic systems

Suggested Contents of Manuscript:

  • a clear statement of the application in terms of the faced problem, the mission or task, and the recipient (e.g., a hospital, or a private company)
  • the metrics to evaluate the performance of the task (e.g., time efficiency, reduction of exposure time of healthcare workers)
  • a description of the work envelope that the robot worked in (e.g., cleaning an empty indoor auditorium, a stadium, a hospital room) and how that impacted robot operation (e.g., avoiding static obstacles such as beds, navigating hallways where walls were glass partitions, etc.)
  • the duration of the operation (e.g., one day, three months, still in use) and any indication of usage (e.g., one time per day, 24/7, etc.)
  • the lessons learned from an engineering perspective
