Special Issue Call for Papers:

Low power consumption has become an important design issue in many electronic microsystems. The number of embedded devices which must be run off of battery power or parasitic power continues to grow. The conventional approaches to designing these systems vary from simply relying on semiconductor manufacturers to provide the lowest power parts to the liberal use of pentagrams. Every low power design is different and will have its own interesting set of problems to solve. Internet of things (IoT) is defined as a process where objects are equipped with sensors, actuators, and processors that involve hardware board design and development, software systems, web APIs, and protocols, which together provide a connected environment of embedded systems. The low power consumption embedded devices can be used in microsystems, and eventually are used in various smart environment such as smart city, smart home, smart transportation system, smart grid, and smart logistic. These low power embedded devices (i.e. sensors, RFID tags, actuators) in IoT are entirely addressable, inter-connected and inter-linked in a heterogeneous wireless environment through standard communication protocols. The IoT enables the loosely-coupled decentralized type of networking leading to an autonomous physical system with sensing and actuating, data processing, decision making, and storing functionalities. Moreover, it provides a platform independent of existing methods to enable user-centricity and gives a stage for undertaking user dependent actions, like controlling the status of an embedded device via Internet. However, these functionalities are still limited to certain scenarios, for instance controlling smart home appliances. The standardization of IoT is yet to be finalized based on standard protocols and architectures. For this purpose, various other similar fields such as machine to machine communication, cyber physical system, wireless sensor networks need to be analyzed based on the existing architectures and protocols such as constrained application protocol, web of things model, etc.

The goal of this special issue is to provide low power consumption architecture of embedded devices for various IoT microsystem environments, which can be applied in the fields of smart homes, smart cities, smart building, autonomous vehicles, considering energy consumption, processing power, communication technologies, resiliency, cost, performance, etc. A standard is requested to cover the integration of the low power consumption embedded devices with the existing methods in an IoT microsystem environment. The recent research findings show impressive enhancements in concatenating the existing technologies under an umbrella. However, there is still a lack of designing of universal low power consumption embedded devices for various type of IoT microsystem environments.

Microprocessors and Microsystems is soliciting high quality unpublished manuscripts presenting original results for its special issue. The aim of this special issue is to bring novel research ideas, highlight the open issues, and indicate current research advancements and future directions in designing of low power consumption embedded devices in IoT microsystems, their architectures and various applications in IoT.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

• Low power next generations of smart embedded devices architectures

• New algorithms and architectures for low power embedded devices in IoT paradigm

• Embedded devices supporting heterogeneous technologies in IoT

• Intelligent techniques supporting embedded devices

• Implementation of low power decision-making modeling in embedded devices

• Semi- and full-autonomous architectures based on embedded devices

• Integration of embedded devices in smart homes, smart buildings

• IoT applications specific smart embedded devices

• Industrial practices and benchmark suites for embedded devices in IoT

• Practices, Issues and Challenges in migrations from conventional embedded devices to low power embedded devices

The special issue seeks submission of papers that present novel original results and findings on “Special Issue on Low Power Consumption Embedded Devices in IoT Microsystems”. Solicited original submissions must not be currently under consideration for publication in other venue.
