One of the main proposals of the recent Energy Strategy is to increase the contribution of the renewable energy resources in the overall energy mix. However, adding large amount of intermittent Renewable Energy power plants, like solar and wind farms, to the electrical grid generates challenges to keep supplying electricity to consumers and maintaining the stability and the reliability of the electrical systems.
In fact, Renewable Energy power plants have very poor potential to regulate the gap between the generation and the demand, since they should always be operating at the maximum possible power. Therefore, in the presence of these sources, the frequency of the power grid would changes faster in case of any disturbance. The zero inertia generators of PV and full converter wind turbines necessitates the overall inertia of the system to be decreased, which would force the existing conventional generators to provide torque and inertia trying to overcome any contingency event. This could lead to the frequency instability problem, that must be compensated using novel Smart Grid ideas.
This Special Issue will focus on all aspects related to the integration of Renewable Energies in existing Power Grids.

The guest editors will consider papers based on presentations at IREC19 (irec-conference.com) for this Special Issue. Selection witll be based on the alignment with the scope and objectives of the journal and this special issue, as well as reviewers\’ comments and authors\’ response to them. Final selection of papers invited for journal submission will be done at the end of the conference.
Selected authors will be invited to submit their significantly extended papers (with more than 30% new content, and updated based on comments received during the IREC19 conference) through using the journal\’s web submission tool at evise.com/profile/#/COMPELECENG/login by selecting “SI-irep” from the “Issues” pull-down menu during the submission process. Guest Editors Bios:
Ahmad M. Harb receive his Ph.D. degree from VirginiaTech., Virginia, USA, in 1996. Currently, he is an a Professor at German Jordanian University (GJU). Dr. Harb is IEEE senior member. Dr. Harb served as dean for the school of natural resources engineering at GJU (Sept. 2011 – Sept. 2013). Dr. Harb is the Editor-in-Chief for two international journals, IJMNTA and IJPRES. Dr. Harb has published more than 65 journal articles and conference proceedings. His research interests include power system, renewable energy, modern nonlinear theory (bifurcation & chaos).
Fernando Tadeo is a currently a full Professor at the School of Engineering (Industrial) of the University of Valladolid, Spain, leading a multidisciplinary research group in Advanced Process Control. He graduated from the University of Valladolid, in Physics in 1992, and in Electronic Engineering in 1994. After completing an M.Sc. in Control Engineering in the University of Bradford, U.K. with the top mark of the class, he went back to Valladolid, where he got his Ph.D. degree in Automatic Control, with Honors. His main interest area is Advanced Control with applications in Process Control (In particular in Desalination) and in Renewable Energies (Wind, Solar and Osmotic Energies)
