Challenges and Opportunities in Informatics/Data Analysis in Smart Tourism

According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO 2016), the number of tourists worldwide is increasing year by year. Particularly with the development of information and communication technology (ICT), the role of data or information in tourism ecosystems including individual travelers, toursim-related companies, and government agencies has become more important than ever (Buhalis and Law 2008; Kim et al. 2010; Poon 1988). In the individual perspective, tourists get travel-related information such as destinations, accommodations, attractions, cost, and time more easily through the Internet, mobile apps, or social media. In the business perspective, travel agencies and tourism-related firms develop and promote customized travel products or services tailored to the individual preferences of travelers based on accumulated data and information. In the government perspective, government agencies such as destination marketing organizations (DMOs) can get in touch directly with travellers and prospects, and can collect and analyze data to develop sustainable tourism policies and strategies.

Given the phenomena of information-intensity in tourism and the high dependency on ICTs, to see the concept of “smart“ being applied to tourism industry is not surprising (Gretzel et al. 2015). Smart means „optimized for a specific need supplied by individual assets in a specific context either on demand or real-time basis“ (Koo et al. 2016, p.1301). Smart tourism consists of multiple components (i.e., smart destination, smart business ecosystems, and smart experience) and layers (i.e., data collection, exchange, and processing) of smart that are supported by ICTs. Based on these considerations, smart tourism is defined as „tourism supported by integrated efforts at a destination to collect and aggregate data derived from physical infrastructure, social connections, government/organizational sources and human bodies/minds in combination with the use of advanced technologies to transform that data into on-site experiences and business value-propositions with a clear focus on efficiency, sustainability and experience enrichment“ (Gretzel et al. 2015, p.181).

Desipite the importnace of information and data analysis in smart tourism, there are several challenges and opportunities in diverse perspecives, including 1) bridging digital and physical sphere, 2) sensors and smartphones as core techologies, 3) during trip in the travel phase, 4) big and open data as the lifeblood, 5) paradigm shift toward technology-mediated co-creation, 6) ecosystem strucuture for smart tourism, and 7) public-private-consumer collaboration in data/information exchange (Gretzel et al. 2015).

Therefore, this special issue attempts to discuss and identify the concept and practice of „informatics/data analysis in smart tourism“.


We welcome papers from a wide range of disciplines as well as papers based on either quantitative or qualitative approaches. We invite researchers to submit original papers that include conceptual, empirical, analytical, or design-oriented approaches. Topics of interest include but are not limited to, the followings:

  • Open and big data analysis for smart tourism and destination marketing

  • Acceptance, adoption, and diffusion of smart tourism systems

Authors are invited to submit original and unpublished papers. All submissions will be peer-reviewed and judged on correctness, originality, significance, quality of presentation, and relevance to the special issue topics of interest. Submitted papers should not have appeared in or be under consideration for another journal.
