BIC BASED MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS FOR CONNECTING SMART WORLD”

Big Data, IOT and Cloud (BIC) play a diverse role for connecting smart world. IoT is a system of related devices, machines, objects, things that can transfer data over a network without any human or computer interactions. In the case of Internet of Things, a thing may be considered as any living or non-living entity integrated with a smart device such as an integrated chip or sensor that is embedded along with the actual thing. Several organizations worldwide have started to use BIC based systems for smart world in order to accomplish better operational efficiency, better service and better understanding of business and customer needs. It has grown leaps and bounds over the years. Its evolution has been unimaginable from machine to machine communication followed by sensor enabled smart device communication and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Systems.

An BIC based Measurement System is built using smart devices that use smart integrated chips and processors, sensors, and smart hardware that promote smart communication with the cloud environment. As an initial step, typical BIC based measurement systems involve collecting data from several smart input devices such as sensors, antenna and micro-controller enabled devices as the first step. The input data is then collated and the data is transferred using a hub or gateway. This data is further stored in a cloud-based environment and further analyzed and a suitable action is performed through output devices such as human based machines. These Big analytical data, which is stored in the cloud, may also be used for business analytics based applications such as customer relationship management and ERP. The primary benefits of BIC based measurement systems are enhanced usability, better decision making, revenue generation, less time consumption, enhanced customer experience, overall business process monitoring, privacy control, flexible virtual environment for anytime access of data, huge data processing ability etc.

The primary benefit of using BIC enabled measurement systems promotes a distributed connected world. Internet of Everything is the connecting component between people, devices or things, data and process. While BIC is more concentrated towards advanced machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, it extends the services by enabling effective and technology aided people-to-people (P2P) communication. Internet has paved the platform for connecting several common computing devices such as desktop computers and laptops. E-banking, e-learning, e-commerce is some essential services that have grown with internet usage. While internet has successfully connected computational devices, it stretched the devices to the next level by empowering a device with additional capabilities so that a common device becomes a connected device and can perform several functions in one device. Typical examples of connected devices are smart phones, smart watches, Google glass etc. that does not just perform the task of the intended device alone but are empowered to act like other devices as well according to the context and need.

Several services based on BIC measurement systems such as smart workspace, smart factories, smart health services, smart and connected retail services, smart agriculture and farming, smart connected vehicles, smart education and smart classrooms, smart and efficient manufacturing and logistics, smart business solutions, smart governance and smart services aiding governance and smart connected cities have exploited the services to promote a better and effectively connected world. Several research works are directed towards extending BIC enabled measurement systems by promoting people-to-people interactions along with conventional machine-to-machine communication. This special issue provides an ideal platform to share novel, innovative and interesting ideas and works related to developing BIC enabled measurement systems that promote an ambience for a distributed and connected world. Dr.M.K.Priyan is currently working as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Middlesex University, London, UK. He had completed his Ph.D. in the Vellore Institute of Technology University. He received his Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Engineering degree from Anna University and Vellore Institute of Technology University, respectively. His current research interests include Big Data Analytics, Internet of Things, Internet of Everything and Internet of Vehicles in Healthcare. He is the author/co-author of papers in international journals and conferences including SCI indexed papers. He has published 38 papers in which 2 in IEEE Access, 1 in IEEE Transactions, 1 in ACM Transactions, 6 in Elsevier Publication and 16 in Springer Publications. He is a reviewer for Elsevier, IEEE Access, IEEE Transactions, and Springer journal. He is a lifetime member in International Society for Infectious Disease, Computer Society of India and member in Vellore Institute of technology Alumni Association.

He has been given the Best Researcher Award for the year 2017 and 2018 at Vellore Institute of Technology University.

Hari is Lecturer in Computer Science at Edge Hill University, UK. He is specialized in Computer Science & Engineering. His research area includes artificial intelligence, soft computing techniques, natural language processing, language acquisition and machine learning algorithms. He is author of various books in computer science engineering (algorithms, programming and evolutionary algorithms). He has published over 50 scientific papers in reputed journals and conferences, served as session chair, leading guest editor and delivered keynotes. He has been given the prestigious award “The Global Award for the Best Computer Science Faculty of the Year 2015” (http://asdf.international/hari-mohan-pandey-asdf-global-awards-2015/), award for completing INDO-US project “GENTLE”, award (Certificate of Exceptionalism) from the Prime Minister of India and award for developing innovative teaching and learning models for higher-education.

Dr.GautamSirvastava is presently working as an associate professor in the department of mathematics & computer science at Brandon University, Canada. His Master degree was completed in the same University of Victoria, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada in the year 2006 with his under graduation from Briar Cliff University, Sioux City, Iowa, USA. He completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Victoria, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada in 2007. Having teaching experience of around 13 years, he has published over 80 research papers and articles. He is an associate editor in IEEE Access and a member of the Technical Program Committee in the IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference and IEEE Globecom. He is also the Guest Editor for Special issues like Data mining in Journal of Non-Linear and Convex Analysis (2018-2019) & Social Data and Artificial Intelligence in Symmetry Journal 2019-2020. Currently, he is a reviewer in several journals.
